Whisper House

Maine, USA

Whisper House sets on a steep forested bank with thick pine and spruce. Views to Penobscot Bay abound through pockets in the canopies of downslope trees. Designed to be non-visable from the driveway and guest parking, only a glass kiosk presents itself to visitors, with the bulk of the building being cut into the hill side beneath.

The entirety of Whisper House is regulated by a 4’ grid. This governs all major walls, spaces, and structural elements. The house was designed not to be seen from the front and there is no image of “house”. Built on a steeply sloping site, the design developed into a half underground, half out of ground structure. Ledge outcroppings are common and the design grounds the building with cast concrete walls that grow out of the ledge and define the east and west edges of the building.
