The Pillars
Massachusetts, USA
The Pillars is a renovation of a classic shingle style gambrel on a Cape Cod bluff. The existing house had a very dated kitchen, low ceilings, and landlocked rooms without connections to other spaces or the wonderful views and the owner wanted a complete change. That and some undersized structural elements led to the complete gut of the interior.

With the house gutted, the interior was something of a blank slate. It was reorganized to put kitchen and dining spaces on the water side, with and office facing the street and the new main entry occupying a corner and using dramatic shingled brackets to support the gracious canopy roof. Two new stone pillars were added to continue the rhythm of the existing, and a new, stunning chimney was detailed to anchor the covered porch, central entry/stairwell, dining room. The chimney was also detailed with a dramatic internal, arched stairway down to a wine cellar.
