OneKHouse

Maine, USA

The concept for the oneKhouse started from “how can we simplify an envelope, make it crazy straightforward, minimize corners and details, and make it something we can build ourselves on a very tight budget…and oh yeah still keep it compelling”. What resulted was a 20’x50’ box with a shed roof pitched the “wrong” way.

The house was set on a high piece of land with wide views of a nearby pond, coastal mountains and rolling hills in between. With a luxury of solar exposure, the plan was set out gather all living space functions at one end of the house, the high end, while the bathroom and bedrooms occupy the descending ceiling heights to the north. The living/kitchen/dining space acts like a lantern in reverse, letting in the surrounding light and views from early morning until late afternoon. The whole house is built from SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels), that the home owner and architect assembled over 10 days time. Heat gained in the open living space is shared with the bedrooms via a dedicated venting system.
